Marie L. d'Ablemont Leydier Hoppins

Marie d’Ablemont was born in December 1863, the youngest child of Auguste Lazard d’Ablemont and Clarrise Lambert of Paris, Seine, France. Six months later her father died of gout at the age of 35.

At the age of sixteen she immigrated to USA in 1880 with her mother Clarisse a piano and voice teacher, and older brothers Charles Lazard d’Ablemont, Greenwich Village feather importer and Felix Ernest Lazard d’Ablemont, Dallas herb farmer.

In 1882 at age 18 she married 48 year old Benjamin Leydier, they had no children. They lived in Manahattan listed in the New York Directory from 1884-1898, with Benjamin traveling four times to France. They were married for 14 years until his death at age 62 in New York City on September 26, 1897 . Earlier that same year he had returned from France embarking from La Havre.

Three years later the 1900 Census shows widowed Marie resided alone at 169 W 81st St .

By 1907 she was returning from France on the S.S. La Savoie and living at 253 West 91st St.

The 1910 Census shows that Marie resided at 125 W 73rd St living with lawyer Samuel Howland Hoppins whom she marries six years later. Living in the household was Francis J. Goodwin a single man whose wife later sues her in the Supereme Court. [see further]

On Sepember 12, 1916, at the age 52, Marie married Samuel Howland Hoppin, attorney from Newport, Rhode Island. Hoppin, a 58 year old bachelor, was senior partner of Hoppin & Berard at 43 Cedars St, NYC. Descended from ………… Mayflower descendants, his memberships include Sons of the Revolution, Society of Colonial Wars.

1917 Mr. & Mrs. Samuel H. Hoppin listed in New York Social Register.

Four years after the wedding in the 1920 Census the Hoppin’s are living at 51 West 85th St, again with Francis J. Goodwin age 51 single.

That same year Marie was sued by Charlotte C. West Goodwin for $50,000 for alienating the affections of her husband Francis J. Goodwin since 1917. This law suit went to the Supreme Court.

By the 1930 Census Marie is getting younger every day, now stating her age as 58 not …… (born 1872 and imm in 1890) residing 96 Albermarle Avenue, Hempstead, Long Island,
